Virginia Clair Johnston Aspenwall, 95, of Cadiz, died Monday, March 15, 2004 at Sunnyslope Retirement Center in Bowerston. She was a former resident of Smithfield, and was the last in the line of the Johnston pioneer family of Jefferson County. She was born February 4, 1909 in Cadiz, a daughter of the late Edwin C. And Mary Elizabeth Howard Johnston. Mrs. Aspenwall was a retired School Teacher, having taught in Wintersville, Cadiz, Mt. Pleasant and Bloomingdale. She was a member of Scott United Methodist Church, where she was active in the women's circle and choir. She graduated from Cadiz High School in 1927, received her BA from Ohio University, and her MA from the University of Southern California. She was a member of the Mayflower Society, the Pioneer Families of Jefferson County, and was an active member of the Moravian Trail Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. A former member of the Harrison County Retired Teachers Association, the Smithfield Garden Club, and the Mt. Pleasant Women's Club, she was an avid gardener, and loved and appreciated nature and the arts. She was the Past Worthy Matron of Smithfield Chapter 332, Order of the Eastern Star. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold E. Aspenwall; and a sister, Margaret Jane Johnston. Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. James (Elizabeth) Tuccinardi of Chillicothe, Ohio; a cousin, William Parker, Jr. of Portland, Oregon; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call Thursday, 6-8:30 p.m. at Clark-Kirkland Funeral Home, 172 S. Main St., Cadiz, Ohio. Funeral Services will be held Friday, March 19, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. at Scott United Methodist Church, 817 E. Market St., Cadiz, Ohio 43907, with Rev. Robert Hooker officiating. Burial will follow in the Seceder Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant, Ohio. Eastern Star Services will be held Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
