Verna Bertz, 89, of Cadiz, died Saturday, May 14, 2005 at Trinity Medical Center, West, Steubenville. She was born June 27, 1915 at Hammondsville, Ohio, a daughter of the late Oscar and Elizabeth West Howes. Mrs. Bertz grew up on a farm between New Athens and Cadiz. She graduated from Franklin High School, where she played on the championship girls basketball team in 1934. After marrying her husband of 66 years, they traveled extensively with his career with the United Mine Workers. She was a cook at the Scio Pottery Co., the operator of the former Blue Star Restaurant, the owner and operator of the former Gabletown Restaurant and was the first Head Cook at Harrison Community Hospital. She is a member of the Presbyterian Church of Cadiz, the Cadiz Garden Gate Club, the Cadiz Business and Professional Women's Club, the Cadiz Women's Civic Club, and was the President of Tent # 63, Daughters of Union Veterans. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of sixty six years, Theodore Bertz, in 2002; a brother Oscar (Bud) Howes; and three sisters, Edith Zollars, Lena Nation, and Helen Hunt. Surviving are a son, Ted and his wife, Judy Parlett Bertz of South Glastonbury, CT, a daughter, Joanne and her husband, David Cessna of Waynesville, OH; six grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. Friends may call Tuesday, 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Clark-Kirkland Funeral Home, Cadiz, where funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Dr. David M. Rice officiating.
