Treva C. Harrah, 95, of Cadiz, died Wednesday at the Carriage Inn of Steubenville. She was born June 17, 1914 in Ashtabula, Ohio, a daughter of the late Earl and Mabel Moats Chapin. Mrs. Harrah taught in the Cadiz Public Schools for over thirty five years. A devoted teacher, she began her career in Ashtabula, and was the only surviving original teacher from Cadiz Westgate Elementary School and the only surviving teacher from the former Unionvale School. She adapted word lists for the Harrison County Spelling Bee, which eventually bore her name. She was graduated from Ashtabula High School and Kent State University, where she was a member of the Kappa Delta Pi Honorary Sorority. She was the advisor of the Merry Maidens 4-H Club for eighteen years, and was a devoted member of the Presbyterian Church of Cadiz for over fifty years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of fifty seven years, Dean Charles Harrah in 1998; a daughter, Carolee Kay Marke; a brother, Royden Chapin; a sister Gladys Rittenhouse and an infant sister. Surviving are a son Charles Alan Harrah of Cadiz and a grandson, Robert Charles Marke of Athens. She was a devoted teacher. Friends may call Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 at the Clark-Kirkland Funeral Home, Cadiz, where funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, September 3, 2009 with Rev. R.J. Leek officiating.
