Master Sgt. Robert Franklin Edgar, retired 22 year Marine Veteran, was called for his last deployment on April 12, 2012, after a short period of declining health. He was born June 5, 1926 in Cadiz Ohio, the only son of Lewis and Bernice Anderson Edgar. He joined the Marine Corp after graduation from Cadiz High School and honorably served his country in WWII, the Korean War and Vietnam. He proudly retired with full honors. He then was appointed Chief of Police of the village of Cadiz where he served the citizens of the village for 10 years. Upon retiring from the position of Police Chief, he joined the Harrison County Sheriff's department as a deputy sheriff for another 10 years. Always being a public servant, he was on the Cadiz Board of Public Affairs following his retirement from the Sheriff's Department. Bob was a well-respected member of the community, and wore his uniforms with pride. He garnered many medals for his marksmanship through the years. He is a member of the Cadiz American Legion Post 34, an honorary member of the Ohio Chiefs of Police Association, and a member of the Marine Corps Association. Bob was married to the love of his life, Marian DeCorte Edgar, for 56 years. She preceded him in death in November of 2009. They spent many memorable years as they served our country and community. Bob loved to be the "handyman" around the house, and always could fix anything. He had a passion for gardening and always planted enough to can preserves for the winter months. He loved to pick black raspberries for Marian to make his favorite pies. We have fond memories of him making his own bullets by melting down the lead, and accompanying him to target practice and shooting matches while in the service. He loved his grandchildren and they have fond memories of spending time at the" house on the hill", and his favorite expression "good grief". He would light up at the mention of his only great granddaughter Allisynn and loved to watch her animated antics. He will be sadly missed by his family. Surviving are three daughters, Donna (Don) Miller of Canton, Pamela (Dan) Edwards of New Philadelphia, and Roberta (Dan) Merryman of Richfield; six grandchildren: Jason (Gretchen) Miller, Darren (Erin) Miller, Danielle (Ryan) Hamsher, Daylene (John) Herman, Robert Merryman, and Lance Corporal USMC Jacob (Grace) Merryman , and a great granddaughter, Allisynn Hamsher. Friends may call Monday, April 16, from 5 pm to 8 pm at the Clark Kirkland Funeral Home in Cadiz. Private burial services will be held at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of sending flowers, Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project for injured Veterans at www.woundedwarriorproject.org ., or to Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County, 716 Commercial Avenue SW, New Philadelphia, OH.
