Martha Haverfield, 95, formerly of Cadiz, Ohio, died Tuesday, October 25, 2005 in Akron, Ohio. She was born January 30, 1910 near Cadiz, Ohio, a daughter of the late Samuel M. and Mary V. Glass Mitchell. A 1928 graduate of Cadiz High School, (then) Miss Mitchell attended Muskingum College. At the age of 19, she began teaching at Science Hill School, a one room school, near Cadiz. After studying summers, she received her B.S. in Education from Ohio University in 1937. In 1932 she began teaching in the Cadiz Public Schools, from which she retired in 1974. She was an active member of The Presbyterian Church of Cadiz, having served as an Elder, Deacon and Trustee. Additionally, she was a charter member of the Cadiz Civic Club, and a member of the Harrison County Historical Society and the Harrison County Retired Teachers Association. In 2002, Mrs. Haverfield moved to Rockynol Retirement Community in Akron. She received the Community Service Award in the field of education from the Cadiz Business Association in 2004. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold C. Haverfield, whom she married in 1947; a brother John G. Mitchell; and a sister, Anne Lawrence. Surviving are a daughter, Mary Haverfield (husband, Dr. Edward McDonald); two granddaughters, Elizabeth McDonald and Katie McDonald, all of Rochester, NY; and a sister, Mary Mitchell of Akron; and several nieces and nephews, including David Mitchell of Cadiz. Friends may call Thursday, 5-8 at Clark-Kirkland Funeral Home, Cadiz. Memorial Services will be held Friday, October 28, 2005 at 12:00 p.m. at The Presbyterian Church of Cadiz.
