Lester Mcelwee

Lester, J. McElwee, 89, of Cadiz, formerly of Cambridge, died Thursday, May 17, 2007 at the Carriage Inn of Cadiz. He was born March 6, 1918 at the family farm home in the Salt Fork area of Guernsey County, a son of the late Judson and Elizabeth McElwee. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Gary Moore. Lester and his wife, Mary Henry McElwee celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary on December 31, 2006. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Nancy Bovenizer of Richmond, Virginia; two grandchildren Shane and Faith Bovenizer; a brother, Wayne and his wife, Ruth McElwee of Newark; and three sisters, Helen Gregg of Cambridge, Emma Tedrick of Canton and Ruth Holmes of New Concord. Lester graduated from Madison High School in 1935. During World War II, he served three years in the U.S. Army including time in the European Theater. After thirty-plus years of service, he retired as a Plant Engineer from AEP's Cardinal Plant in Brilliant, Ohio. He was a dedicated member of the East Warren St. Church of Christ in Cadiz, where he served as a Deacon and an Elder. Lester was a Master of Hounds, and was nationally known for his success in breeding, raising, training and showing ''Black and Tan'' hunting dogs. He and his wife owned and operated McElwee's Buckeye Kennel in Cadiz. They traveled throughout the United States, showing and competing their grand champion stock. He authored the book, ''Seventy Six Years of Hunting and Training Dogs to Coon Hunt and Show...and Still Counting''. His family lovingly referred to him as their relative who had ''gone to the dogs''. He was also an avid hunter. Friends may call Saturday, 6-8 p.m. at Clark-Kirkland Funeral Home, Cadiz, where funeral services will be held Sunday, May 20, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. with Evangelist Keith Kull and Evangelist Jerry Dawson officiating.
