John Edward Francis, 76, of Cadiz, died Saturday, September 21, 2013 at Gables Care Center in Hopedale. He was born June 14, 1937 in Martins Ferry, a son of the late Lawrence Minteer "Mike" and Grace Shaw Francis. John was the owner and operator of Francis Construction in Cadiz for 50 years. He was a member of the Cadiz Volunteer Fire Department for 53 years, served as Chief 35 years, and was a Fire Instructor. He was a Harrison County Commissioner for 12 years and Cadiz Village Councilman for 17 years. He was a lifelong member and former Trustee of the Presbyterian Church of Cadiz. He was an Army Reservist for 10 years, and plowed snow throughout Cadiz for many years. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Phyllis Jean Davis Francis; two sons, John (Mary) Francis of Canal Winchester, OH, and James Francis of Wheeling; a daughter, Jody (Jeff) Fletcher of Baltimore, OH; ten grandchildren: John Michael Francis, II, Joseph, Jarrett and Jake Francis, Jennifer (Joe) Parsley, Jason and Justin Fletcher, Paul, Mike, and James Edward Francis, II; a brother, Robert L. "Burp" Francis of Buckeye Lake; and his mother-in-law, Lillian Evelyn Davis of Cadiz. Friends may call Tuesday, 3-8 at the Presbyterian Church of Cadiz, 154 West Market St., Cadiz, where funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. R.J. Leek officiating. Burial will follow at Cadiz Union Cemetery. A Fire Fighters' Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
