James M. Carpenter, 85, of Cadiz, died Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at the Harrison County Home, Cadiz. He was born May 2, 1926 in French Creek, WV, a son of the late James E. and Vesta Vera Smallridge Carpenter. Mr. Carpenter was a retired Superintendant at R. & F. Coal Company. He was an Army Veteran of WW II and a member of Masonic Lodge # 45, F. & A.M. in Steubenville and the Scottish Rite, Valley of Steubenville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-mother, Mary V. Carpenter; four brothers, Denzel, Rex, Duane and Maurice Carpenter; and a sister, Nancy Cape. Surviving are his wife, Hannah Sponhaltz Carpenter; two children, Belinda (Kenny) Coffman of Cadiz and Randall (Regina) Stephens of Mannington, WV; four grandchildren: James and Mark Adams, Rana Taylor and Raime Santee; eight great grandchildren; and three sisters, Patricia Szelast, Dorothy (Charles) Kenny and Helen (Vince) Chociej, all of Wintersville. Friends may call Sunday, 6-8 p.m. at Clark-Kirkland Funeral Home, Cadiz, where services will be held Monday at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
