Helen Irene McConnell died Sunday, December 28, 2003 in Springfield, Ohio. She had resided in Springfield since 1997. Born December 6, 1907 in New Athens, Ohio, she was the daughter of John Stiers McConnell and Lillie Wallace McConnell. Helen was educated in the New Athens Schools and received her teaching degree from Muskingum College. Her teaching career of 45 years began at the Fairpoint School with a majority of her years spent teaching first grade at the Mt. Pleasant Schools. Her love of children and teaching continued throughout her life. Helen was a member and elder of the Presbyterian Church in New Athens and a member of the following organizations: Moravian Trial DAR, Harrison County Historical Society, PEO, Franklin Museum and many other groups in Mt. Pleasant and the New Athens area throughout the years. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother and spouse, Wallace and Dorothy McConnell; sisters and spouses Margaret McConnell Watson and Hays Watson, Mary McConnell Harris and Jay Harris. Helen is survived by her niece and husband, Cynthia Harris Valente and Paul Robert Valente; great nephew and spouse, Dr. Jonathan Harris Valente and Wendy Valente, East Greenwich, RI; great niece, Cynthia Paula Elizabeth Valente (Betsy), Washington, DC; great-great nieces, Jillian Suzanne Valente and Leah Elizabeth Valente, East Greenwich, RI, and cousins, her friends, former neighbors and two special friends from Springfield, EldaValente and Joy Hall. She will be missed by all that knew her. Calling hours are Saturday, January 3, 2004 from 1:00 p.m. until time of service at 2:00 p.m. at the New Athens Presbyterian Church with Rev. Edward Mooney and Rev. Jack Visser officiating. Burial will follow at Longview Cemetery, New Athens, Ohio.
