George D. Bomboris, 72, of Adena passed away on February 21, 2025, at the Harrison County Home after a brief battle with cancer. He was born January 31, 1953, in Wheeling, WV, a son of the late George and Catherine (Holliday) Bomboris.
George worked at the former Y&O Coal Mine and Lindy Paving. After his retirement, he enjoyed working at the golf course, where he could be found golfing any chance he had. He was a member of the Adena Sons of the American Legion. He was an avid sports fan. He loved watching high school sports. He rarely missed an event.
In fall of 2022, George was inducted into the Harrison County Hall of fame. The following article was written up regarding his incredible athletic ability: “George Bomboris, a 1971 Franklin High School graduate, lettered ten times throughout his sports career. George was quarterback\linebacker for the New Athens football team of only 13 players. In basketball, Bomboris started every game but one, not making the tip-off because of a personal emergency and returning to enter in the first quarter. Bomboris averaged 13 points a game, had high games of 28 points multiple times, and joined with teammate and County HOFer Rick Ferri to help lead his 1970-1971 Bobcat basketball team to a #2 State Ranking.
While George was a great all-around athelete, his dominant sport was baseball. While hitting a blistering .440 for his career, Bomboris excelled at pitching and catching, throwing three no-hitters his senior season. Against Smithfield, George threw a no-hitter and hit three home runs. George would also play for Bob Mazeroski and Maynard Legion for four years, hitting over .300 for his Legion career. Bomboris starred in the Ohio Valley Baseball League for 27 years and helped lead Lafferty to multiple championships as a staple All-Star Team catcher.
George’s toughness is legendary. After fracturing his finger from a foul tip in high school and finding the cast cumbersome, he ripped off his cast, tied his fingers together, and hit a double. At age 38, George had his appendix removed and was back on the field in just over a week. Bomboris had stitches rip when he dove into second base after hitting a gap shot, and later in the same game, pitched relief during the 7th inning, shutting down Elm Grove for the win with blood showing through his uniform. George state, “I was all that was left to throw, and I wanted to win, and then I visited the hospital to get stitched back up.” No big deal for Bomboris, one of the fiercest competitors ever to grace Harrison County.
George is currently retired and helps around Belmont Hills Country Club to keep busy. Bomboris has two daughters, Laura and Stephanie, and two sons, Ben and Sam.”
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers-in-law, Constance (Mike) Slaga, Sue (Jack) Moore, Ronald Ferri, and a granddaughter, Katelyn Bomboris.
He is survived by his children, Laura (Lenny) Adams of Freeport, Stephanie Bomboris of Adena, Ben Bomboris of Georgetown, and Sam (Crystal) Bomboris of Flushing; 5 grandchildren, Emily (Bill) Perko of Bridgeport, Evan (Shannon) Dombroski of Mingo, Kourtney (Lee) Dombroski of Cadiz, Nathan and Ethan Bomboris of Flushing; 4 (and one on the way) great grandchildren.
