Freda M. Mellott, 90, New Athens, died Saturday, April 12, 2008 at Southeastern Ohio Medical Center in Cambridge, Ohio. She was born December 8, 1917 in Belmont County, Ohio a daughter of the late A.W. and Maude Mae VanFossen Hefling. She was a member of the New Athens United Methodist Church where she served as president of the United Methodist Women and was a member of the Willing Workers Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Harrison County Republican Central Committee, Harrison County Republican Womens Club, Harrison County Chapter of the Ohio Geneological Society, Harrison County Historical Society, and a member of the Franklin Muesem in New Athens. She was preceded in death in addition to her parents; by her husband, Lumbly V. Mellott whom she married on November 18, 1937; a daughter, Bonnie Mellott in 1943; a grandson, Edward A. Carter; and 3 sisters: Velma Sproull, Helen Hefling, and Faye E. Campbell. She is survived by 2 daughters: Janice M. Richards and her husband Charles of Palm Coast, Florida and Barbara V. Birney and husband J. Carl of Freeport; 5 grandchildren: Belinda M. Carter of LaGrange, Ohio, John L Carter of Fromberg, Montana., Virginia K. Wesebaum, Sheffield Village, Ohio, Tammy Y. Hill of Senecaville, Ohio, and Kimberly R. Wheeler of Quaker City, Ohio; 7 great grandchildren: Brittany N. Smith and Bethany A. Wesebaum both of Sheffield Village, John E. And Alyssa B. Carter both of Fromberg, Montana, Chelsie R.Tooms, Alexis R. Wheeler and Ashleigh R. Wheeler all of Quaker City, Ohio; and a sister, Ethel E. Papes of Cleveland. Graveside service will be held Monday, April 14, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Rodney Bowers officiating at Longview Cemetery, New Athens, Ohio.
