Bernard Paul Kuryn

Bernard Paul Kuryn, 83, of Hopedale, Ohio passed away on December 19, 2024, at home surrounded by his family after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born on May 21, 1941, in Amsterdam, Ohio, a son of the late Barney and Anne Kuryn. 

Bernard was a 1959 graduate of Hopedale High School where he played football—specifically on a six-man football team! Bernard was a 3rd generation coal miner and a proud member of the United Mine Worker’s Association. He was a founding member of the Hopedale Sportsman’s Club. He also served as a Hopedale Town Council member for many years. Bernard was an avid outdoorsman. He is still listed as a member of the Buckeye Big Buck Club with a buck that he harvested with a score of 152 6/8 inches in 1981. He loved the outdoors, both hunting and fishing and he instilled his passion in his children and grandchildren. 

He is survived by his wife of 62 years Shirley Mae Carman Kuryn of Hopedale; children, Kathy Diane (Michael) Pelegreen of Hopedale; Bernard Scott (Jennifer) Kuryn of Jewett, Ohio; grandchildren, Michael (Shannon) Pelegreen, Kassandra (Greg White) Pelegreen, Jon Paul (Justine Jones) Pelegreen, Bernard Rhett (Hunter Gladman) Kuryn, Mariah Paige (Zakk Kelley) Kuryn, and William Nevada (Leigha Stewart) Kuryn; great-grandchildren, Jaiden, Rylee and Ivy Pelegreen; brother, Tim (Judy) Kuryn of Hopedale, Ohio; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. 

Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 22, 2024, from 12:00p.m. to 5:00p.m. at Clark-Kirkland-Barr Funeral Home in Cadiz, Ohio. The funeral service will be held on Monday, December 23, 2024, at 12:00p.m. with Dean Blythe officiating at Clark-Kirkland-Barr Funeral Home in Cadiz. Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Hopedale.
