Andrew Hutyera, 81, of Cadiz, Ohio passed away on August 4, 2024, camping with family at a fishing cabin on “Cadiz Island” on the French River in Alban, Canada. He was a vigorous outdoorsman who enjoyed canoeing, fishing, photography, and fine woodworking including building wooden canoes.
Andy was born on January 25, 1943, in Cleveland, Ohio, the son of the Hungarian immigrant Andrew Hutyera and Bertha J. Dulovics Hutyera. Andy attended John Marshall High School (class of 1961) before studying physics at Case University (BS, 1965) then law at Case Law School (SJD 1968). At university he met the love of his life, Jackie Knight of Onondaga NY, whom he wed in 1967. They resided in Timberlake, Ohio, then New Philadelphia, Ohio where they started a family, then Cadiz Ohio where they raised their girls Holly, Anne, Katherine and Mary.
Andy was a beloved and devoted community servant, practicing law for 39 years. He served as Tuscarawas County Court judge and then Harrison County prosecutor 1980-1996. He was also an active member and elder of the Cadiz Presbyterian Church where he sang in the choir. Andy has served on the Sally Buffalo park board. He served the Salvation Army coordinating the annual Christmas kettle drive. In 2017 Jackie and Andy were named Citizens of the Year by the Cadiz Business Association.
In their retirement Andy and Jackie have enjoyed many outings with the Wooden Canoe Heritage Association. They have taken many February trips to Ely, Minnesota where they’ve enjoyed skiing, dog sledding, snowshoeing and catching up with friends. They have also enjoyed the Wheeling Symphony and seeing plays at Niagara on the Lake. As committed grandparents they have enjoyed spending time with their nine grandchildren, attending games, concerts, sharing their love for the great outdoors, leading canoe camp at Camp Presmont and celebrating birthdays and milestones together as a family.
Andrew was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Joyce Ellen Tomasch (Walter, age 94 of South Bend, Indiana). He is survived by his wife, of 57 years, Jacqueline Knight Hutyera; children, Holly (Ted Hahn) Hutyera of Mansfield, Ohio, Anne (Scott) Douglas of Rocky River, Ohio, Katherine (Eric) Hajek of Copley, Ohio, and Mary (Shawn) Conley of Timberlake, Ohio; grandchildren, Sam Hahn, Merith Hutyera, Mrs. Elizabeth (Asher) Silvey, Wade, Rebekah, Sarah, and Grace Douglas, Brandon and Trina Hajek, and nephews Andrew (Suzanne Jacques) Tomasch of Northville, Michigan and Greg (Peachee) Tomasch of Yuba City, California.

Guests are encouraged to bring small items of Andy’s woodworking creations (pepper mills, bowls etc) to display at the calling hours and then take them home and continue to enjoy them in memoriam.
