Alert W. Nowjack, 96, of Cadiz, died peacefully on Tuesday, December 18, 2012 at Weirton Medical Center. He was born on November 18, 1916 in Cleveland, Ohio the son of the late Richard and Wanda Dickheiser Nowjack. Mr. Nowjack was, as he emphatically said, "the teacher of children" at Willard, New Athens and Cadiz High Schools. Following retirement he resumed full-time farming. He was actively involved in both the Presbyterian Church of Cadiz and St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Wintersville, Ohio where he was a member. Mr. Nowjack served as a medic in the 148th Army Infantry Regiment in World War II from 1941 -1945. He was cited for gallantry in action on New Georgia and on Luzon, Philippines receiving the bronze and the silver stars. He was preceded in death in addition to his parents, by his wife Margaret Jane McDonald Nowjack and by his sister Ella Rose. He is survived by 2 sons: David Nowjack of Cadiz and James (Lynn) Nowjack of Westerville, Ohio; 2 daughters: Ruth (John Raymer) Nowjack-Raymer of Vienna, Virginia and Amy Nowjack of Grove City, Ohio and by 5 grandchildren: Barbara Jane (Kevin), Emilie, Sam, Joe and Austin. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, December 22 from 10:00 -11:00 a.m. at Clark-Kirkland Funeral Home, Cadiz where funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. R.J. Leek officiating. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery, Steubenville, Ohio. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 133 Lovers Lane, Wintersville, Ohio 43953.
